Producing a Wonderful Legacy

Community Responsibility

Foster kids typically experience environments that encourage the mindset of entitlement. A strong, independent adult strives towards contributing to community, not taking from it. The challenge is to “grow up” and see beyond ourselves and choose to contribute to a community that has needs that we can serve.

Part of the process of maturing to adulthood is learning to look beyond self and put the “needs” of others over the “wants” of ourselves. This means the lower needs of our selves, as Maslow describes in his hierarchy, like safety, environment and love must be solidly built before we can move on to think beyond ourselves.

Giving back to community also builds a sense of belonging to something larger than immediate family. It encourages relationships with other healthy individuals and helps develop a social network to broaden the view of life.

Community contribution helps build in accountability. The opinions of others and the encouragement that comes from shared success helps develop a greater sense of self-identity and awareness larger than we can achieve on our own.

We therefore look for fun community projects that will be memorable.
