Life Skills
I learned some of the things I needed as an adult from my family. How to turn my underwear pink I learned on my own.
We spend time with each individual and tailor a life skills program to fill in their needs. Some of the areas we analyze are meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, personal hygiene, germ awareness, fashion and common sense.
The most important thing we strive to have our kids practice is consequential thinking. Cause and affect not only escapes the estranged child but too often eludes many adults we know. So how do we get our kids to think about what choices they make before they act?
We ask a lot of hypothetical questions to encourage this thought process. “How do you think that will work out?” is one of our favorites to ask.
We also believe in logical consequences. Again we are moving away from parenting and putting the burden of responsibility back on these young adults. They need to feel the consequences of their choices as it affects the other domains of their life, just like they will feel the consequence of their actions in adulthood.
