Preventing Wilting Leaves

Therapeutic

Treating the underlying issues of foster kids can be the most difficult thing when working with kids. They have defense mechanisms that have kept them going for most of their life and they don’t lower them for the first therapist that comes along. Not surprisingly many of these kids turn eighteen and there is no change in those defenses.

In order to succeed in the other domains these young adults can come to terms with the issues of their past. Their brains have developed to a point where there is more openness to healing when relationships are built to a level of trust that that allows for defenselessness. They see that the world around them offers more than they can have wrapped in their self-protective childhood minds.

When these young adults find a trusting relationship, either with piers or with adults, they are often ready to open themselves to healing. We strive to facilitate those relationships with openness and honesty.

We have excellent support from several therapists and psychiatrists in our community. Our relationship with them encourages interpersonal work with these young adults and is facilitated by their professional guidance when we come to issues.
